National Express bigger in Morocco than UK after EUR1bn Casablanca contract

National Express PLC (LON:NEX) has won a EUR1bn contract to run the buses in Casablanca for the next 15 years.

It nearly doubles National Express’s presence in Morocco and means that from next year National Express will run more buses in Morocco than the UK.

The contract starts in November with an initial 400 buses, which rises to 700 buses in 2020 carrying 100mln passengers a year.

National Express will also introduce new payment and scheduling systems alongside a network re-design.

The bus group is now the sole operator in five of Morocco’s six biggest urban areas.

Dean Finch, chief executive, hailed the contract win, which follows on from a major expansion of its operations in Boston in the US earlier this year and the start of a 400-unit bus contract in Rabat.

“I am delighted we have secured this significant contract in Morocco. This nearly doubles our presence in Morocco, which had already doubled in August with Rabat’s successful start-up.”
